I was THIS close..

t

o throwing my Blackberry Curve 8330 to the Blackberry Curb. The latest software update from Verizon (version 4.5.0.175) created a lot of painful and irritating chirps that would pierce my ears through either the earpiece or handset directly. I read, (unverified) that it is the speaker phone boost? In any case, Verizon says they've never heard of it but if you google it, there are plenty of people posting about exactly this.
Horrible.
In three days I went to the Verizon store twice, to look at the Palm Pre. Both times I came back empty handed. The second time quite hastily as I was just informed I'd have to pay full price for the thing since I'm new in my Verizon contract. $599 for a phone after getting an entire 50" TV for $750. I don't effing think so.

What happened was I followed a bunch of unverified advice (never again) from this website, and ended up with a bigger mess than when I started. I applied the Blackberry 5.0 operating system, and lost the ability to save wallpapers, and the damn thing was crawling at a snail's pace. Utter BS and I should have known better. I didn't want my chirping back from version 4.5.0.175, so I downgraded to operating version 4.5.0.138. I had a heart attack, during the downgrade, the transfer barfed with a fatal error - something to do with JVM, but I just re connected the desktop and it actually plowed the rest of it. I almost bricked it. Yikes.

So far, no memory lag, no chirping, no negative issues whatsoever. Fingers crossed.

I finally got my phone operable and downloaded my first Blackberry theme, and also an app to do screen captures of my Blackberry

Now I'm happy with my shiny toy again.
