Lets not forget, to tether you need to use up the USB port, which means you won't be able to charge while you are tethering. You really think it'd be ok to have your internet completely off every time you have to charge your phone. If/When the phone can be rooted you could wirelessly tether it, that might solve the problem. Also Verizon should not be charging anything for this. You are already paying 29.99/month for unlimited 3G. Tethering is simply moving the connection from the phone to your PC via hardwire, and puts no extra usage on their network, therefore they should not be charging you.
