How fun

What a Saturday. Started out at Norma's 80th birthday party, and ending up at Jan's for some dive bar crawling. Let's see, I ate spaghetti and chocolate cake at Norma's birthday, basically eating like a 5 year old, then ate bar food for dinner, hot wings, jalapenos with ranch dressing, fried cheese. Yikes. I better eat veggies today.

I was asked to speak at Norma's party, and tell a funny story. I told Debs that I didn't have any stories to tell, so she gave me full license to make one up, and make it spicy. Mmmmmmuhuuuuaaw. I managed to get a story with rehab, drinking, sex addiction, roofies, parachutes, smoking, curry, a new ride named Stormin Norma at Great America and stripper poles. I had a half and half audience, which made it even funner to do. Half were offended (yay) and half were laughing. I also managed to hook up Norma's sister with a nice glass of white wine, which I'm not sure she was supposed to have. She left dancing in her walker. My work there was done.

Like many, I am a visual person

You probably are too. Most people are. There are visual, audial, and tactile learners. We use a combination of these three to perceive and communicate.

Being a visual learner/perceiver, I picture what people tell me, I picture what I hear. You may hear people say things like "I see what you're saying", or you may see them looking up or closing their eyes when you're talking to them. They're imagining what you're saying to them. Picturing it.

This brings me to the point of my topic here. The misuse of the phrase "anal-retentive". I hear this phrase in the most inappropriate places. Restaurants, work, parties. I doubt people really know what the phrase means when they say it.

the anal phase. This is when children are beginning to potty train, and become aware of this part of their anatomy. There's a lot of focus on it because of toilet training, and a child (who doesn't cooperate) can react one of two ways: anal retentive, or anal expulsive. The anal retentive child refuses to use the toilet at all, because he cannot go where he pleases. As an adult the anal retentive person is fussy, meticulous, overly organized, and sometimes anti-social. The anal expulsive child reacts violently, by soiling his pants or other areas, in protest against using the toilet. He proves he will put his feces anywhere he likes. The anal expulsive adult is brash, unorganized, and often unconcerned with others' feelings.

When people use the phrase "anal retentive", I doubt they are referring to its actual meaning. And lucky me, I picture it. A spoiled brat who won't poop.

Even worse, perhaps a million-fold, is the abbreviated form of this phrase, "anal". It means "of, pertaining to, involving, or near the anus". Please do not use this phrase unless you are talking about your actual pooper. And this topic, should never be brought up in the workplace, in a restaurant, anywhere talking about your ass would be inappropriate. It means assy. Okay I just made that word up, but really, since the misuse of the word "anal", we need a new one. And again, please remember your visual friends when using the word "anal", "anal retentive" or "assy" or I will kick your anus.

This has been a public service announcement.

I am still researching options

This blogspot workaround is clunky. Blogger canceling their ftp service is devastating. This site's setup used to be simple, and I could understand it. Now, this contortion at the domain registrar is their answer. I hate it. I like straightforward. I hate weird. The contortion is weird.

Anyone have solutions of how I can have a blogging system where I do not have to chase security patches and program upgrades on my own webhost, I'm up for it. I'd even throw decent money at it. I want what I had already with blogger. Dammit.

It's not what you know

it's who you know. And Mr. Friedl helped my by setting up my domain forwarding today. I was failing miserably.

YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS

I rarely all cap something, at this risk of looking lame. I just don't care in this case. Watch this video or I will kill you dead for the rest of your life.

t

o throwing my Blackberry Curve 8330 to the Blackberry Curb. The latest software update from Verizon (version 4.5.0.175) created a lot of painful and irritating chirps that would pierce my ears through either the earpiece or handset directly. I read, (unverified) that it is the speaker phone boost? In any case, Verizon says they've never heard of it but if you google it, there are plenty of people posting about exactly this.
Horrible.
In three days I went to the Verizon store twice, to look at the Palm Pre. Both times I came back empty handed. The second time quite hastily as I was just informed I'd have to pay full price for the thing since I'm new in my Verizon contract. $599 for a phone after getting an entire 50" TV for $750. I don't effing think so.

What happened was I followed a bunch of unverified advice (never again) from this website, and ended up with a bigger mess than when I started. I applied the Blackberry 5.0 operating system, and lost the ability to save wallpapers, and the damn thing was crawling at a snail's pace. Utter BS and I should have known better. I didn't want my chirping back from version 4.5.0.175, so I downgraded to operating version 4.5.0.138. I had a heart attack, during the downgrade, the transfer barfed with a fatal error - something to do with JVM, but I just re connected the desktop and it actually plowed the rest of it. I almost bricked it. Yikes.

So far, no memory lag, no chirping, no negative issues whatsoever. Fingers crossed.

I finally got my phone operable and downloaded my first Blackberry theme, and also an app to do screen captures of my Blackberry

A much better investment

I got a new TV for the living room yesterday, instead of going to the jewelry show. I had a wild hair, seeing all the great deals on TVs due to the Superbowl, and decided to get a new big screen TV instead. While the screen is bigger, it takes up a whole lot less space than my other TV. My living room has been transformed. It feels soooo much bigger now that the windows don't have the love seat in front of them. Now you can see the TV from both the couch and the love seat. Got a super bargain for the TV too, of course they've come so far low in price but, $750 for a 50" HDTV is kickass. KICKASS I tell you!

Saturday night's game was fun, it's always funner when the Sharks win. Having club seats, row 10 is kickass too. Got a new Sharks jacket which I found out a day later is reversible. Jackpot! At first I thought that they did a really good job with the lining.

Moxie and I enjoyed a nice run in the sun Saturday. It's been ages since we've run with the sunshine hitting us.

Friday after work, I had dinner with my long time friend Priscilla. She braved the downpour from Union City to my house which she'd never been to before. We had a really nice dinner of appetizers at the Fish Market, one of my favorite places to eat. One of my New Year's resolutions is to hook up with old friends on a more regular basis. So far, Priscilla, and Adriana have met with me this month and of course you always wonder what took you so long.

Thursday, Kurt and I had pizza at the Olive Garden. Now if you haven't had their pizza, you're missing out. That plus their endless salad is the perfect dinner for two. Bonus tip : eating at the bar means no screaming kids next to you. We were in part, celebrating the (2nd) diamond bracelet he gave to me. :) The first one was for New Year's eve, the other one, he just found in his front yard Thursday after work bringing the trash cans back from the curb. It's real 14kt white gold and diamonds. The diamonds are not nearly as nice as my first bracelet but what a miracle it was found at all. It was really dirty and the rain must have moved the leaves just right for a twinkle to catch his eye. I took my electric toothbrush to get the really packed dirt out of the undergallery. No scratches at all, and the clasp works very well. This leads me to speculate that perhaps it was dropped when Kurt's house got burglarized a couple of months ago. In any case, it looks lovely next to my other bracelet.
